First Friday: CNN “A Long March to Freedom: 1960 – 1968”

August 1, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

This past May, the Greensboro Historical Museum lent more than a dozen iconic artifacts and documents to a CNN exhibition on the 1960s, an exhibition which was installed at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Included were four lunch counter stools from the Greensboro Woolworth store. On Friday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m., the Historical Museum and International Civil Rights Center and Museum are cosponsoring a free screening of the CNN special, “A Long March to Freedom: 1960 – 1968.” It’s fitting that the screening will be at the ICRCM at 134 S. Elm St., a place that was a launching site of the 1960s sit-in movement.

In this episode, the moral mission of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement is re-examined by eyewitnesses to history, with historical context provided by scholars and authors. Events include lunch counter sit-ins, Freedom Rides, Birmingham Children’s Crusade, Selma to Montgomery march, Freedom Summer, passage of Civil Rights and Voting Acts, and more. Total running time is 2 hours.
