SUMMARY:Triad History Day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Triad History Day is a free one-day public festival focused on Triad history\, both the stories and the people who preserve them. The event will feature a “history hall” with displays from history organizations\, a series of lightning round talks focused on local history\, as well as booths focused on oral history\, preservation advice\, and digitization of community materials. \nVisitors can learn more about local archives\, museums\, libraries\, and other historical organizations in the “history hall.” Participating institutions include representation from all over the Triad. See the complete participating institution list below. \nVisitors with photographs or other records that help document Triad history can bring materials to the scanning station at Triad History Day. There\, archivists will scan the materials for inclusion in UNC Greensboro’s community history portal. Visitors will also receive a copy of the scan. \nAn oral history booth will allow participants the opportunity to record a 15-minute interview about an interesting story related to the Triad region. Interviews may involve two friends having a conversation\, a family member interviewing a family member\, or an individual being interviewed by a UNCG graduate students serving as an oral history facilitator. SUMMARY:Friendly Furniture: The Quaker Cabinetmakers of Guilford County
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture on Guilford County history with Robert Leath\, Chief Curator & Vice President at Old Salem Museums & Gardens. \nThe distinctive furniture of early Quaker settlers in Guilford County was first presented by the late John Bivins in a pioneering article in the May 1973 issue of The Magazine ANTIQUES\, “A piedmont North Carolina cabinetmaker: The development of regional style.” Bivins identified several case pieces—consisting of chests\, chests of drawers\, clock cases\, desks\, desks and bookcases\, high chests\, and high chests on frame—as part of a local and distinct group. Additional documentation over the past fifty years has revealed a complex network of Quaker cabinetmakers responsible for the region’s earliest furniture identity. \nFREE: Co-Hosted by The Greensboro History Museum\, The Guilford College Quaker Archives\, and Preservation Greensboro – Blandwood Mansion. \nThis program takes place at Blandwood Carriage House!

Brown\, who has published several volumes of spooky tales and appeared on TV and radio\, has been enchanting and frightening audiences at the museum for more than three decades. Bring your blankets\, a lawn chair and prepare to have your spine chilled. \nBoth the tour and the stories are free\, family friendly and open to all. \nThis unliving history and family fun are part of the Greensboro Youth Council’s Ghoulash!
