DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Dr. Diya Abdo. Her new book American Refuge: True Stories of the Refugee Experience shares the stories of seven refugees she met as part of Every Campus a Refuge\, an organization she founded at Guilford College. \nFrom the publisher: In this intimate and eye-opening book\, Diya Abdo – daughter of refugees\, U.S. immigrant\, English professor\, and activist — shares the stories of seven refugees. Coming from around the world\, they’re welcomed by Every Campus A Refuge (ECAR)\, an organization Diya founded to leverage existing resources at colleges to provide temporary shelter to refugee families. \nAbdo is the first daughter and granddaughter of Palestinian refugees born in their country of displacement\, Jordan. A graduate of Yarmouk University\, she earned master’s and doctorate degrees from Drew University. She is a full professor in the English and Creative Writing Department of Guilford College\, where she founded the first chapter of ECAR. She is the recipient of several national community engagement awards\, including the 2021 J.M.K. Innovation Prize for her work with ECAR.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we launch a new year of By the Book programs with a special evening out at Oden Brewing Co. \nLocal beer historians Richard Cox\, David Gwynn and Erin Lawrimore narrate the history of the Triad brewing industry\, from early Moravian communities to the operators of nineteenth-century saloons and from Big Beer factories to modern craft breweries. The authors cofounded Well Crafted NC (www.wellcraftednc.com)\, a project focused on documenting the history of beer and brewing in North Carolina through historical research\, oral history interviews with industry professionals and the collection of records from modern craft breweries. \nAfter conversation and questions with authors\, stick around for some Trivia Tuesday takeover at 7 pm. DESCRIPTION:Stephen Bell and Erika Reynolds will discuss access to mental healthcare for Native people and the ways in which connecting to food and culture can serve as an access point to healing. \nStephen Bell is a member of the Lumbee Tribe and works as a clinical social worker and American Indian Education Coordinator for Guilford County Schools. In this role\, he enjoys getting to work with Native youth to help them heal by connecting with their Native culture\, and to educate others on the great diversity amongst Native people and communities. \nErika Reynolds is Cherokee/Arawak/Saura and is a graduate of UNCG with bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Spanish. She is currently pursuing her master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies. With a professional background in the non-profit world and the legal system\, Reynolds is enthusiastic about giving voice to those who largely go unheard and making those unseen more visible. \nNative Healing: Connection to Culture and Food is organized by and takes place at the McGirt-Horton Branch of the Greensboro Public Library; the program is co-sponsored by the Greensboro History Museum. DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum Guild for a talk about the objects we inherit and their meaning in our lives with Julia Ridley Smith. \nWhen Julia Ridley Smith’s parents died\, they left behind a virtual museum of furniture\, books\, art\, and artifacts. Between the contents of their home\, the stock from their Greensboro antiques shop\, and the ephemera of two lives lived\, Smith faced a monumental task. What would she do with her parents’ possessions? Smith’s wise and moving memoir in essays\, The Sum of Trifles\, peels back the layers of meaning surrounding specific objects her parents owned\, from an eighteenth-century miniature to her father’s prosthetics. \nSocial time begins at 10\, followed by the program at 10:30.
