SUMMARY:Friendly Furniture: The Quaker Cabinetmakers of Guilford County
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture on Guilford County history with Robert Leath\, Chief Curator & Vice President at Old Salem Museums & Gardens. \nThe distinctive furniture of early Quaker settlers in Guilford County was first presented by the late John Bivins in a pioneering article in the May 1973 issue of The Magazine ANTIQUES\, “A piedmont North Carolina cabinetmaker: The development of regional style.” Bivins identified several case pieces—consisting of chests\, chests of drawers\, clock cases\, desks\, desks and bookcases\, high chests\, and high chests on frame—as part of a local and distinct group. Additional documentation over the past fifty years has revealed a complex network of Quaker cabinetmakers responsible for the region’s earliest furniture identity. \nFREE: Co-Hosted by The Greensboro History Museum\, The Guilford College Quaker Archives\, and Preservation Greensboro – Blandwood Mansion. \nThis program takes place at Blandwood Carriage House!

SUMMARY:Reflections on D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Allied D-Day invasion at a free lunch & learn program at the Greensboro History Museum. \nThe preparations for the June 1944 invasion at Normandy began almost two years earlier. The planning and execution of what was the largest amphibious invasion in history involved over a million American GIs on English soil\, intricate deception tactics by Allied intelligence and logistics of moving men and thousands of tons of supplies across 100 miles of English Channel to a 50-mile wide beachhead fortified and defended by German troops. Phil Koch will share maps\, photos and stories surrounding the June 6 D-Day invasion that we commemorate 75 years later. \nPhil Koch was born in New York City and moved to Greensboro in 1975 with his wife\, Anne\, and four children. He retired from Ciba-Geigy’s agricultural division in 1994. In 2012\, Phil returned to college and graduated with a degree in history in 2017 – at 82\, the oldest ever to graduate from UNC Greensboro. He has a special interest in twentieth-century history – having experienced much of it personally. \nBring your own lunch or call 336-373-2982 to order a box lunch for purchase. \nImage credit: Library of Congress
