SUMMARY:Apply to Participate in MOMSI Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help the Greensboro History Museum understand and improve our social impact! \nWe are seeking participants in a national survey project\, Measurement of Museum Social Impact (MOMSI). \nAnyone can participate. All you have to do is apply at https://museumsocialimpact.org/apply. Then plan to visit the museum three times November 2021-May 2022. After your final visit\, you will be asked to complete a 30-minute online survey regarding your experience. \nThere are a limited number of opportunities to participate in this study\, and participants will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis. Those who complete the survey will receive complementary membership in GHM Inc. and be entered into special prize drawings! Deadline to sign up extended to October 30. \nBoth first-time visitors and regular visitors are welcome to participate. Please share this opportunity with friends and family who might be interested in visiting the Greensboro History Museum and participate in this study. \n[button link=”https://museumsocialimpact.org/apply”]Apply[/button] \nHave questions? Contact Glenn Perkins\, Curator of Community History \nMore information about MOMSI \nWorking with the Utah Division of Arts & Museums\, the Greensboro History Museum will study the social impact we have on our community and assist in refining a social impact tool for the museum field. \nThanks to a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS)\, the Utah Division of Arts & Museums\, in partnership with Thanksgiving Point\, had the opportunity to select museums across the country for the Measurement of Museum Social Impact (MOMSI) project. After a competitive application and review process\, GHM was one of 38 museums selected for the study. \nSocial impact is the effect of an activity on the social fabric of a community and the well-being of those who live there. This study will measure social impact through strengthened relationships\, health and well-being\, continued education and engagement\, and intercultural competency. \nWorking with the MOMSI team in Utah\, our museum will recruit and survey visitors from our local community. The data collected will inform the Greensboro History Museum about our social impact and will provide validated data about the museum field generally. \n

SUMMARY:Greensboro Public Library's Book Lovers' Social
DESCRIPTION:February is National Library Lover’s Month. You are invited to the Greensboro Public Library’s thirteenth annual celebration of books and reading! Meet your fellow book lovers. We will welcome three North Carolina authors for an engaging conversation about books\, libraries\, reading and book clubs: \nJason Mott: A 2021 National Book Award winner\, Hell Of A Book is a story that goes to the heart of racism\, police violence\, and the hidden costs exacted upon Black Americans\, and America as a whole. In Mott’s new novel\, an African-American author sets out on a cross-country book tour to promote his bestselling novel. But it also tells the story of Soot\, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past\, and The Kid\, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour. Throughout\, these characters’ stories build and their stories converge. It is about family\, love of parents and children\, art\, and money\, and the always tragic story of a police shooting playing out repeatedly on the news. Mott is the author of four novels. The Returned\, Jason’s debut novel\, was adapted by Brad Pitt’s production company\, Plan B. \nJulia Ridley Smith: When Greensboro author Julia Ridley Smith’s parents died\, they left behind an antique shop and home filled with furniture\, books\, art\, and artifacts. Smith and her brother were faced a monumental task. What would she do with her parents’ possessions? Her memoir\, The Sum of Trifles\, peels back the layers of meaning surrounding specific objects her parents owned\, from an eighteenth-century miniature to her father’s prosthetics. A Japanese screen embodies her mother’s principles of good taste and good manners\, while an antebellum quilt prompts Smith to grapple with her family’s slaveholding legacy. Along the way\, she turns to literature that illuminates how her inheritance shaped her notions of identity and purpose. \nJill McCorkle: McCorkle’s latest novel\, Hieroglyphics\, reveals the difficulty of ever really knowing the intentions and dreams and secrets of the people who raised you. In this masterful novel\, McCorkle deconstructs and reconstructs what it means to be a father\, a mother\, or a child piecing together the world around us. A perennial book club favorite and masterful storyteller\, McCorkle has published seven novels and four collections of short stories. Five of her books have been New York Times Notable books\, and her novel\, Life After Life\, was a New York Times bestseller. She has written for The New York Times Book Review\, The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, Garden and Gun\, The Atlantic\, and other publications. She was a Briggs-Copeland Lecturer in Fiction at Harvard University\, where she also chaired the department of creative writing. She is currently a faculty member of the Bennington College Writing Seminars and is affiliated with the MFA program at North Carolina State University. \nThis program can be viewed three ways: \n1. It will be live with socially distanced limited seating at the Greensboro History Museum\, 130 Summit Avenue. To register\, email Beth Sheffield by Friday\, February 11.\n2. The program will be available on Zoom. Register in advance at this link.\n3. The program will also be streamed on the Library’s Facebook Page.

SUMMARY:Women in Greensboro’s Landscape of Memory
DESCRIPTION:Greensboro has statues\, markers and memorials dedicated to many men from the past – Nathanael Greene\, William Sidney Porter\, Dr. George Simkins\, the Greensboro Four – but far fewer to remind us of women from the past. For International Women’s Day we’ll talk to people connected to three projects focused on women to be dedicated in Greensboro in the coming months: \n\nSarah Thuesen and Tiffany Holland from Guilford College on a new marker to recognize free woman of color Lavina Curry and her support of Freedom Seekers on the Underground Railroad in the New Garden area\nCatherine Magid on a monument and marker recognizing suffragist Gertrude Weil and the establishment of the North Carolina League of Women Voters at the historic Guilford County Courthouse\nArtist Victoria Milstein on the Women’s Holocaust Memorial planned for LeBauer Park\n\nAt a time when the value and purpose of monuments and historic markers is under debate\, what do these efforts mean for a changing landscape of memory here in Greensboro? \nRegister to join on Zoom or watch live on YouTube \n[button link=”https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lPz8vmQvSzGoQ4_2iF4xtA”]Register[/button] \nThis International Women’s Day program is also part of a new GHM Education Webinar series Minding Our Monuments: Discovering Lost Pieces of Greensboro History
