SUMMARY:Museum Guild Meeting with author J. Edward Gray
DESCRIPTION:“Getting America Back on Track after the Civil War” is the topic for J. Edward Gray\, retired attorney and author of Trouble at Mono Pass and New Garden. You may know the speaker as Jim Gray\, Greensboro resident and museum docent. \nAfter years of research\, Gray decided there was enough interesting material for a compelling story that would take readers to a different time and place. He used his storytelling skills to craft a novel about two Quaker brothers who make decisions that put them at odds with their faith. And it is those brothers’ decisions\, for good or bad\, that impact the lives of family and friends for three generations. Trouble at Mono Pass takes the brothers to California during the construction of America’s first transcontinental railroad\, a story that Gray will share on April 18. \nGuests and newcomers are always welcome at Guild meetings. For more information\, call Guild President Josie Gibboney at 336.272.2438.

SUMMARY:Author Talk! Unusual for Their Time: On the Road with America's First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Och has chosen Greensboro and the Greensboro Historical Museum as the first stop on his national book tour for Unusual for Their Time: On the Road with America’s First Ladies. Why? First Lady Dolley Madison of course. Her birthplace was here\, the anniversary of her birth is May 20\, and there are innumerable ways her life was unusual for her time. \nOch dubbed himself the First Ladies Man after his year of travels as a producer on the C-SPAN series First Ladies: Influence and Image. In simple terms\, he was hooked\, and decided to write a book with a mix of history\, personal insights and travelogue. While this first volume concentrates on the 1700s and 1800s\, Och will also share his thoughts about how First Ladies from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama have been part of their husband’s campaigns and in many cases\, do better in the polls before\, during and after their White House years. \nSays Anita McBride\, former Chief of Staff for Laura Bush\, “The First Ladies Man is bringing these great women into the spotlight and giving them all the recognition they so well deserve.” \nA booksigning follows the program. To learn more\, visit www.firstladiesman.com.
