The authors cofounded Well Crafted NC (www.wellcraftednc.com)\, a project focused on documenting the history of beer and brewing in North Carolina through historical research\, oral history interviews with industry professionals and the collection of records from modern craft breweries. \nAfter conversation and questions with authors\, stick around for some Trivia Tuesday takeover at 7 pm. DESCRIPTION:Stephen Bell and Erika Reynolds will discuss access to mental healthcare for Native people and the ways in which connecting to food and culture can serve as an access point to healing. \nStephen Bell is a member of the Lumbee Tribe and works as a clinical social worker and American Indian Education Coordinator for Guilford County Schools. In this role\, he enjoys getting to work with Native youth to help them heal by connecting with their Native culture\, and to educate others on the great diversity amongst Native people and communities. \nErika Reynolds is Cherokee/Arawak/Saura and is a graduate of UNCG with bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Spanish. She is currently pursuing her master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies. With a professional background in the non-profit world and the legal system\, Reynolds is enthusiastic about giving voice to those who largely go unheard and making those unseen more visible. \nNative Healing: Connection to Culture and Food is organized by and takes place at the McGirt-Horton Branch of the Greensboro Public Library; the program is co-sponsored by the Greensboro History Museum. Between the contents of their home\, the stock from their Greensboro antiques shop\, and the ephemera of two lives lived\, Smith faced a monumental task. What would she do with her parents’ possessions? Smith’s wise and moving memoir in essays\, The Sum of Trifles\, peels back the layers of meaning surrounding specific objects her parents owned\, from an eighteenth-century miniature to her father’s prosthetics. \nSocial time begins at 10\, followed by the program at 10:30. In the meantime\, check out our other upcoming events at https://greensborohistory.org/events.\nJoin us for a conversation between author Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore\, Professor of History Emerita at Yale University\, and Maya Brooks\, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the NC Museum of Art\, about Gilmore’s new book\, Romare Bearden in the Homeland of His Imagination: An Artist’s Reckoning with the South. Books will be available for purchase. \nRomare Bearden (1911–1988)\, one of the most prolific\, original\, and acclaimed American artists of the twentieth century\, richly depicted scenes and figures rooted in the American South and the Black experience. Bearden hailed from North Carolina but was forced to relocate to the North when a white mob harassed his family in the 1910s. His family story is a compelling\, complicated saga of Black middle-class achievement in the face of relentless waves of white supremacy. It is also a narrative of the generational trauma that slavery and racism inflicted over decades. But as Glenda Gilmore shows in this trenchant reappraisal of Bearden’s life and art\, his work reveals deep imagination\, extensive training\, and a rich knowledge of art history.

SUMMARY:Deeper into Democracy: Voting & Elections in NC Today
DESCRIPTION:What’s on voters’ minds this fall ahead of midterm elections? How are court decisions shaping the state’s political landscape? How are the latest electoral maps influencing contests? Political scientist Christopher A. Cooper will be talking with veteran political reporter Lynn Bonner about what may be shaping North Carolinian’s choices this November in a free public program. \nChristopher A. Cooper is Robert Lee Madison Distinguished Professor and Director of the Public policy Institute at Western Carolina University. In 2013 he was named North Carolina Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He is a regular contributor to the Old North State Politics blog\, co-author of The Resilience of Southern Identity: Why the South Still Matters in the Minds of Its People and co-editor of The New Politics of North Carolina\, both published by UNC Press. \nLynn Bonner has worked as an Investigative Reporter at NC Policy Watch since October 2020. Prior to that\, she worked for 26 years as a reporter at The News & Observer\, where she covered the state legislature and politics\, and wrote extensively about mental health\, state Medicaid policies and spending\, and public education. \nThe Deeper into Democracy series supports NC Democracy: Eleven Elections. This exhibition explores choices and change across 11 state elections between 1776 and 2010\, illustrating the twists and turns of who could participate\, how voters cast their ballots\, and what influenced decisions that continue to shape what democracy means today.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greensboro Public Library for this special presentation with author Oscar Hokeah starting with a light continental breakfast served at 8:30 am. Told in a series of voices\, Calling for a Blanket Dance takes us into the life of Ever Geimausaddle through the perspectives of his family as they face myriad obstacles. His father’s injury at the hands of corrupt police\, his mother’s struggle to hold on to her job and care for her husband\, the constant resettlement of the family\, and the legacy of centuries of injustice all intensify Ever’s bottled-up rage. \nAuthor Oscar Hokeah is a citizen of Cherokee Nation and the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma from his mother’s side and has Mexican heritage through his father. He holds an MA in English with a concentration in Native American Literature from the University of Oklahoma\, as well as a BFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). \nBooks will be available for purchase and a signing will follow Mr Hokeah’s presentation.
