It is the most important holiday in China\, and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea\, Vietnam\, and countries with a significant overseas Chinese population. While the official dates encompassing the holiday vary by culture\, many who celebrate the holiday consider it the time of the year to reunite with loved ones. In the Chinese zodiac\, 2026 is the Year of the Horse. The celebrations begin with New Year’s Eve on February 17 and last for 15 days\, concluding with the Lantern Festival on March 3. Different regions across Asia celebrate Lunar New year in many ways and may follow a different zodiac. ” Find out more…

SUMMARY:Film screening: "The Harvest" with historian Douglas A. Blackmon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of the PBS documentary\, The Harvest: Integrating Mississippi’s Schools\, and a conversation with the film’s director\, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Douglas Avery Blackmon. \nBlackmon will discuss his experiences as part of Leland\, Mississippi’s first integrated public school class in 1970. The film is a deeply personal depiction of one Southern town’s painful struggle to integrate its public schools and the continuing repercussions still felt today. \nThe Harvest follows a coalition of Black and white citizens who worked to create racially integrated public schools in the most unlikely place: a 1960s cotton town in the middle of the Mississippi Delta\, the most rigidly segregated area in America. It tells the story of how that first class became possible\, then traces the lives of Blackmon and his classmates\, teachers and parents through high school graduation in 1982. \nNarrated by Blackmon and featuring candid interviews with his fellow pupils and others\, the film follows the experiences of Blackmon’s class through school integration\, deep friendships and awkward separations\, in classrooms and on playgrounds\, in plays and athletics\, at homecoming and graduation. The film reveals that while many interracial friendships were formed in school\, racial divisions often still existed outside the classroom. \n\nThis program is in partnership with NC Humanities and the UNC Greensboro Department of History. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Greensboro Public Library One City\, One Book – Films & Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy three short films and commentary from best-selling author Laura Carney\, filmmaker Curtis Chin\, and Zelda Lockhart\, author of Trinity at 6:30 pm\, Tuesday\, October 21\, at the Greensboro History Museum\, 130 Summit Ave. Carney\, author of this year’s One City\, One Book selection\, My Father’s List: How Living My Dad’s Dreams Set Me Free\, shares her journey with a short film by Erin Everson. \nWe will also screen PBS’s Warren King: King of Cardboard by filmmaker Curtis Chin and a short film about Zelda Lockhart\, her work in Africa and generational healing. A discussion with the panelists will follow the films. \nThe subject of Curtis Chin’s film\, Asian American Warren King builds life-size sculptures of impressive realism armed solely with cardboard and glue. Chin is also the author of Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant\, offering a poignant and humorous look at growing up in Detroit in the 1980s as a gay Chinese American kid—where the family restaurant served as both sanctuary and battleground. \nZelda Lockhart is a current Fulbright Specialist engaging in cross-cultural story projects for generational healing in the U.S. and abroad. She holds a PhD in Expressive Art Therapies\, an MA in Literature\, and a certificate in writing\, directing and editing from the NY Film Academy. Her work as an author and expressive arts consultant and educator centers on the power of story and nature to connect us across barriers and to heal our generations. \nLaura Carney’s One City\, One Book Greensboro Residency began October 7 and the author will be leading events through October 23\, 2025. Her book\, My Father’s List\, is the story of how one woman—with the help of family\, friends\, and even strangers—found the courage to go after her own dreams after realizing those of her free-spirited father. \nOne City\, One Book is funded by the Greensboro Public Library Foundation. The Foundation provides resources beyond public funds to enhance the facilities\, programming\, technology\, book collections\, and other materials of the Library. SUMMARY:2025 Wicker Endowment Lecture with Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson
DESCRIPTION:Discover the riveting hidden history of Claire McCardell\, the most influential fashion designer you’ve never heard of.\nJoin us for an evening with award-winning writer Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson. She will share how fashion innovator Claire McCardell popularized comfort and practicality in women’s wear with zippers\, pockets\, ballet flats\, and more. McCardell’s work reinvented American sportswear and set women free from the severe\, hyper-feminized silhouette championed by male designers after World War II. \nElizabeth Evitts Dickinson’s work has been published in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, Harper’s\, The Washington Post Magazine\, and many other publications. She has recently talked about McCardell at New York’s Jewish Museum\, the Maryland Center for History and Culture\, and The New York Historical. Her new book\, Claire McCardell: The Designer Who Set Women Free\, is getting rave reviews from all around: \nClaire McCardell revolutionized the way we dress; everything was intentional\, nothing was frivolous\, and comfort was as vital as glamour. This book captures her remarkable ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit\, and it offers a new\, intimate glimpse into the experiences\, people\, and places that shaped her perspective. \n—Tory Burch \nIn the hands of Dickinson\, this is more than just the biography of a fashion revolutionary: It is a story of the fight for women’s identity and\, incidentally\, the birth of an American industry. \n—The New York Times \nSigning to follow with copies available to purchase from Scuppernong Books. \nFree. This program has reached capacity\, and we are no longer taking reservations. \n\n This program is in partnership with UNC Greensboro Consumer\, Apparel\, and Retail Studies \n  \n\nAbout the Endowment\nRuth Perkins Wicker created the John Floy Wicker Endowment Fund in memory of her husband in 1995. Architect John Wicker helped design and build many of Greensboro’s most memorable structures\, from Friendly Shopping Center to Page High School. He also had a lifelong interest in history\, and the endowment in his name has supported nearly 20 free public programs at the museum\, including talks by distinguished scholars including Malinda Maynor Lowery\, John Shelton Reed\, Lynn Dumenil\, and Charles Reagan Wilson. \n
