DESCRIPTION:Screening of The Green Book Guide to Freedom documentary\, followed by a panel discussion of elders and experts. \nThis evening begins with the launch of the new traveling exhibit “Navigating Jim Crow: The Green Book and Oasis Spaces in North Carolina.” Developed by the NC African American Heritage Commission with funding from the Institute of Museum & Library Services\, the exhibit explores The Negro Motorist Green Book: A guide and resistance tool which fostered a crucial network that allowed African American communities to thrive during a turbulent period in North Carolina. \nFollowing this launch\, watch screening of The Green Book Guide to Freedom (TV-PG; run time: 60 min.)\, at 7 pm. This Smithsonian Channel documentary chronicles the guide that helped African American motorists travel safely across America during the Jim Crow era. \nDr. Valerie Ann Johnson\, Dean of the School of Arts\, Sciences & Humanities\, Shaw University\, will moderate a panel discussion following the screening.
