DESCRIPTION:Screening of The Green Book Guide to Freedom documentary\, followed by a panel discussion of elders and experts. \nThis evening begins with the launch of the new traveling exhibit “Navigating Jim Crow: The Green Book and Oasis Spaces in North Carolina.” Developed by the NC African American Heritage Commission with funding from the Institute of Museum & Library Services\, the exhibit explores The Negro Motorist Green Book: A guide and resistance tool which fostered a crucial network that allowed African American communities to thrive during a turbulent period in North Carolina. \nFollowing this launch\, watch screening of The Green Book Guide to Freedom (TV-PG; run time: 60 min.)\, at 7 pm. This Smithsonian Channel documentary chronicles the guide that helped African American motorists travel safely across America during the Jim Crow era. \nDr. Valerie Ann Johnson\, Dean of the School of Arts\, Sciences & Humanities\, Shaw University\, will moderate a panel discussion following the screening. She will be in conversation with: \nDr. Torren Gatson\, Assistant Professor of Public History\, UNC Greensboro\nReginald Hodges\, Arts and Culture Catalyst and Greensboro native\nBobby Ledbetter\, Elder with experiences being and working at Plaza Manor Hotel\nNatalie Pass Miller\, Proprietor\, Magnolia House\nLisa R. A panel with Greensboro artist Sunny Gravely and craftivist Kathy Newsom follows Greer’s talk. \nBetsy Greer is author of Knitting for Good! and editor of the anthology Craftivism: The Art of Craft and Activism. Greensboro History Museum features some of her embroideries within the Smithsonian traveling exhibition American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith. Painter\, teacher and arts entrepreneur Sunny Gravely helped start The Artist Bloc gallery\, coffee shop and art supply store and TAB ArtsCenter in Greensboro. Kathy Newsom directs The Corner Market\, a weekly artisan and farmers market operating in Greensboro since 2013\, and has organized creative projects such as Lindley Park’s Knit the Bridge. \nThis year’s International Women’s Day Luncheon highlights the intersection of making and democracy as part of Project Democracy 20/20. \nFree program. From debutante scholarship balls for local high school students to providing supplies to new mothers through their Stork’s Nest program\, Zeta Phi Beta’s Beta Nu Zeta chapter has served greater Greensboro and Guilford County for decades. \nGuest speaker Dr. Arwin Smallwood\, Chair of the Department of History and Political Science at North Carolina A&T State University\, will address the sorority’s legacy and impact and the larger role of black Greek letter organizations on campus and within the city. \nThe Greensboro Black Greek Letter Organizations series is part of a broader look at the history of service organizations that help shape Greensboro. Check our website for the latest updates. \n— \nSmithsonian curator Barbara Clark Smith on American democracy past and present \nOur nation rests on the consent of the people. But who are the people? How should those people participate to make their voices heard? The exhibition American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith explores these questions\, which have faced every generation of Americans since the nation’s founding. In this talk\,  Barbara Clark Smith recounts the thinking that shaped the exhibition and explores the unforeseen challenges posed by the earthquake shaking US politics today. \nBarbara Clark Smith\, co-curator of American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith\, is a well-known historian of Revolutionary America. In her career at the Smithsonian\, she has also produced exhibitions on 18th-century everyday life; 17th-century Jamestown\, Quebec\, and Santa Fe\, and Thomas Jefferson’s Bible. She is a Curator of Political History at the National Museum of American History.
