SUMMARY:Guilford Courthouse National Military Park 2017 Revolutionary Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robert F. Smith will present “Equipping the Southern Army: Manufacturing Military Stores for an Insatiable Patron.” He is Assistant Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem\, Pennsylvania. His book\, entitled Manufacturing Independence: Industrial Innovation in the American Revolution\, will be available for purchase. \nGuests will be the first to see the rare and recently conserved knit cap worn by Colonel Arthur Forbis at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Forbis\, a local militiaman\, was mortally wounded during the battle\, and this stained cap was kept by his family for generations until it was given to the museum over 80 years ago. Dr. Paula Weller\, Regent of the Colonel Arthur Forbis Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution\, will be available to talk about Colonel Forbis\, and Susan Joyce Webster\, Curator of Costumes and Textiles\, will be available to talk about the conservation of this important textile. \nReservations are required due to limited seating. DESCRIPTION:The Search for Blackbeard’s “Queen Anne’s Revenge”\nLindley S. Butler\, PhD\, UNC-Chapel Hill \nDr. Butler\, a senior North Carolina historian and past president of the Historical Society of North Carolina\, was engaged as a volunteer diver and served as historian of the “Queen Anne’s Revenge” Shipwreck Project from 1997-2017. This ship \, which was the flagship of the infamous pirate Blackbeard\, sank in the Beaufort Inlet in 1718.
