Andrew Och has chosen Greensboro and the Greensboro Historical Museum as the first stop on his national book tour for Unusual for Their Time: On the Road with America’s First Ladies. Why? First Lady Dolley Madison of course. Her birthplace was here, the anniversary of her birth is May 20, and there are innumerable ways her life was unusual for her time.

Och dubbed himself the First Ladies Man after his year of travels as a producer on the C-SPAN series First Ladies: Influence and Image. In simple terms, he was hooked, and decided to write a book with a mix of history, personal insights and travelogue. While this first volume concentrates on the 1700s and 1800s, Och will also share his thoughts about how First Ladies from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama have been part of their husband’s campaigns and in many cases, do better in the polls before, during and after their White House years.

Says Anita McBride, former Chief of Staff for Laura Bush, “The First Ladies Man is bringing these great women into the spotlight and giving them all the recognition they so well deserve.”
