Established in September 1975 by Bishop Frank McDaniel Williams and Mother Florence P. Williams, New Jerusalem Baptist Church, later renamed New Jerusalem Cathedral, held its first worship service at the YWCA on Pearson Street in Greensboro. Soon the new church counted 167 members. Previously pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Williams was also a community leader, who founded Greensboro’s OIC (Opportunities Industrialization Center) and served as local organizer for Dr. King’s 1968 Poor People’s March on Washington.
This Community Voices Display created by New Jerusalem Cathedral highlights the congregation’s half century.
The Greensboro History Museum’s community voices space hosts displays developed and produced by local organizations to highlight significant and sometimes unheard parts of our city’s history.
