Showcasing five crazy quilts from the museum’s collection, Stitching Stories: Crazy Quilts highlights how North Carolinians have contributed to the crazy quilt craze. First popular in the 19th century and having revivals in the 1930s and today, these quilts feature irregular fabric pieces and intricate embroidery that showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of the makers. More than just textiles, crazy quilts capture the personal histories, cultural trends, and resourcefulness of the women, families, and communities who made and used them.

About the Guest Curator: Emma Waldie is a PhD Candidate in UNCG’s History Department. She is a crafter and quiltmaker passionate about the history of craftwork and neurodivergence. She worked as an intern at GHM from the summer of 2023 to the fall of 2024. During her collections internship, she located, organized, documented,
and re-housed GHM’s quilt collection, which led to the creation of this exhibit.
