Repatriating Japanese Wartime Objects

Feature

May 1, 2025

In 2023-24, Greensboro History Museum Curator of Collections Ayla Amon worked to identify and return items in the museum that had been taken from Japanese soldiers during World War II. The nonprofit Obon Society is working to identify families connected with the items, which include photographs, dog tags, and yosegaki hinomaru, or a “good luck flags,” silk pennants Japanese soldiers carried with wishes from their families and communities.

Read about the repatriation efforts in this The Assembly story from June 2024.
